Medieval charm in the Stour Valley

Discover the Suffolk Wool Towns

The Suffolk Wool Towns are among England’s finest medieval towns and villages, shaped by the prosperity of the wool trade. Set within the Stour Valley, they are a destination for heritage, architecture and gentle exploration.

Centred around Lavenham, Clare, Long Melford and Kersey, these towns are defined by timber-framed houses, ornate pargeting and impressive churches. Market squares and winding lanes reveal centuries of wealth in guildhalls, merchant houses and weavers’ cottages.

Lavenham boasts more than 300 listed buildings and a striking 16th-century Guildhall. Clare combines castle ruins with independent shops and cafés, while Long Melford’s broad green and grand church reflect its former status. Kersey’s picturesque street completes the storybook scene.

With antiques, country pubs and countryside walks close by, the Suffolk Wool Towns offer a rich blend of history, culture and rural Suffolk charm.
